In 2012, after just 3 years in the field as an SLP (and only 1.5 as a CCC) and several settings, I made the decision to quit my job and my career as an SLP. Forever. I vowed never to return to the field and to move on, with the career and profession I was “meant” to be in. My reason? The ongoing, growing, chronic stress I was experiencing and the full on lack of ways to make it any better. In fact, I tried a LOT of things that I thought would be helpful.
I started going to yoga classes.
I worked out and ran.
I ate healthy.
I picked up new hobbies.
I tried new schedules and new settings.
But I still felt the stress and quiet sadness of being in a job I didn’t want to be in and felt disconnected from.
What I didn’t do was let anyone in on the stress I was experiencing, until it started to affect my daily outlook and mindset, my relationships, and my health.
What I wish I had, was someone who understood my stress and my work as an SLP, and who knew not only strategies to use but how to help me figure out the right strategies for my life and my needs.
I took me 5 years off, working and training and teaching in the fields of yoga, mindfulness, mind-body fitness, and health coaching, to figure out how to best manage my stress, help others to manage theirs, and, more importantly, enjoy being an SLP again.
The one thing I learned was this – our field can be incredibly stressful but it should NEVER take quitting for years (or entirely) to help you overcome your stress. There should be people there to help you recognize, understand and then take charge of your stress.
You should not have to go through this, struggling to figure it out, all on your own.
That is what I am here to help you with.
Together, we will:
- Look at where you are now and the journey that has led you here
- Break down your current strategies and struggles for managing your stress
- Uncover stress management and mindfulness strategies that work best for you
- Work together step-by-step to create new strategies that work for YOUR needs
Yes, being an SLP is stressful, but you do not have to go through it alone, and you do NOT have to quit in order to finally take charge of and manage your stress.
Let’s work together to help you thrive as an SLP, and human.

As an SLP, a little bit of stress here and there is inevitable. It might even last a few days or weeks, but should slowly get back to a regular pace and workload again – one where you can enjoy your workday, feel like you are making a difference, and keep some spark and passion alive about the work you do.
It definitely shouldn’t lead to constant dread and depletion, where you feel buried under a pile of work, stress and overwhelm. But unfortunately, this is where many SLPs have landed and it doesn’t seem to be getting better (and this was before being hit with the stress of the pandemic).
- The bad news – being an SLP is incredibly stressful a lot of the time and SLPs are contemplating leaving the field or jumping from job to job, because it feels like the only option. I know this is how it felt for me before I left for nearly 5 years.
- The good news – you don’t have to be worn down by constant stress, even when the stress surrounds you. You can feel it, work through it, and use Evidence-based strategies to manage it, build resilience, and not feel like you have to quit to be happy (or just content).
- Bonus good news – stress isn’t your fault! It’s the way your brain is wired to protect you, but it absolutely backfires in the modern world when faced with constant triggers.
There are a lot of different ways you can start to put these into practice, and trying to figure out what to do, how to do it, and what works best for you can be almost as overwhelming as the stress itself.
It helps to have someone who is not only trained in the tools of stress management, but also someone who has been through it and continues to work on managing their own stress as an SLP.
I left the field after 3 years, due to chronic stress. Quitting felt like my only option. I pursued training and certifications in things that interested me and helped with my stress, such as yoga and meditation, wellness coaching and mind-body fitness. After 5 years of teaching these things, I came back to the field of SLP. I now work to help other SLPs reduce and manage their stress, so they don’t feel like quitting is the only option.Your education and expertise and drive are worth WAY too much.
